Paper Airplanes

I didn't check this book out to be fancy, I just really don't know how to fold a good paper airplane.  Pretty sad state of affairs.  (When did I lose this ability?)

It is a necessity here -- so I recruited some help.  We're loving it!

Bonus: it makes a winning "waiting for our big kid" activity.

Need to Get Away?

Made by friends, this beautiful origami ornament inspired us to share it with our book club.  We fancied it looked like a whimsical hot air balloon, transporting us over oceans and continents, just as it did Professor William Waterman Sherman and his fellow Krakatoans in The Twenty-One Balloons.

Follow the simple directions for a waterbomb base.
Then complete your balloon.
(This site has clear and easy directions for so many kid friendly projects.)

Thread your needle with embroidery floss.
Be sure the eye of the needle will pass through the beads you'll be using.
Tie a bell onto the end of the floss (where you would normally knot it).

 String beads.

Add your balloon by inserting the needle through the blowing hole
and pushing it through to the other side.

  String more beads.

Tie it off by creating a loop, for hanging.

Bon Voyage!

Happy Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day planning to you, that is!  How about a cute card?  Martha has a folded-shirt & a shirt cuff version we're trying out this year (and I found some super simple instructions).  I guess it's all about the clothes this year.  Or not!

Valentine’s Day + Math = Fun

We belong to a math co-op where our children enjoy math in such fun ways. No worksheets or flashcards here! They play, they fold, they craft, they discover.
I thought of our math friends when I found these fun Valentine-making instructions. I liked the magic message cards, folding hearts, heart-in-the-fold Valentine, bonbon-filled hearts, and origami hearts.

Sela decided to make Gnome Sweet Gnome Valentines. There’s math here, too: fractions, multiplication, measuring, addition, subtraction. It’s all good stuff!

And what Valentine’s Day would be complete without sweets? Cooking is a great way to do math -- wouldn’t you agree? I can’t decide whether we’ll make whoopie pies, cupcakes for Cupidwindow pane hearts, conversation heart fudge, or sweet fortune cookies. Hmmm… Or should I say, “Mmmm!”?
